In the moment, people tend to blame people for taking actions that antagonize violent and genocidal governments and bring down repression. In retrospect, however, those actions are easily understood as morally justifiable, even if they aren't necessarily strategic.

but in all seriousness, calling sign language 'wild gesticulation' is a big part of why deaf people are so much more likely to be killed by cops. maybe if we all had more exposure to deaf people and deaf culture it wouldn't be so confusing for them to see someone communicating that way!
