Boo. I was enjoying this until it all sort of fell apart for me in the last 10%. Too much saccharine schmaltz, fireflies, attempts at ‘magical realism’ and page after page about a sheep named Elaine. #booksky

I moved to Hurstville in Sydney recently, and I didn’t realise Sumner Locke Elliott, author and homosexualist, was a local from just next door in Kogarah. Here he is remembered in tile.

Post yourself from a different era

[Me (far left) at Kaos Comedy Restaurant, 90s. I had the biggest crush on the guy I'm sitting next to. It was very much unrequited.]

I'm packing box after box of books, and getting reacquainted with some old friends. Cudos to 16 year old me who had the good taste to buy 3 Dragon's Dream titles way back then; Syd Mead: Sentinel, Roger Dean: Views and 21st Century Foss. I know nothing of Dragon's Dream but they loved a trippy font.

It's a good day when the new release book 5 of a favourite series jumps to the top of the TBR pile. "Carnival of Lies" by D.V. Bishop, the 5th installment of the Renaissance detective Cesare Aldo series. This time he's left Florence, for Venice in the year 1539. Intrigues ensue! #booksky

I finally got around to seeing the 2021 film Firebird, as it was just added to the free streaming service (SBS OnDemand) here in Oz. Oh my, such a beautiful, sad, poignant film, especially knowing it's a true story. It was released last year in Japan and I love the Japanese poster (pic 2). #firebird

I've just started reading The Will of the Many by James Islington (Heirachy book 1), and oof the world building is great. A fantasy blend of classical Rome, with a bit of Dark Academia, and an almost steampunk lack of tech. That actually doesn't do it justice. Book 2 isn't out until November. [sad]

Happy birthday to this dead set hottie @tomtheotter.bsky.social. More than 5 1/2 years together and we're still making each other laugh daily. I love you, happy birthday.

If you see this post, find a pic of you from five years ago and post it.

(The early days of the Covid lockdown, wearing a crazy night cap I knitted for fun. Before my cancers were diagnosed, and with noticeably less grey in my beard.)

New read: Cloistered by Catherine Coldstream, a memoir of her 12 years as a cloistered nun. I've only just started it, but I'm really enjoying it so far. Judging by the prologue her experience was... mixed, at best.

I finished "A Merciful Sea" this long weekend. So good! I'm sad to say goodbye to Nightingale and Courtney, as this was the end of the triptych, but it was a thoroughly satisfying read. #KatieDaysh #NightingaleandCourtney #Booksky
