Superman '86 to '99

A chronological examination of the raddest period in Superman history by @mrmxy.bsky.social and @donsparrow.bsky.social Tumblr: https://superman86to99.tumblr.com/ Patreon: https://patreon.com/superman86to99 Newsletter: https://buttondown.com/superman86to99
An excellent list, but I feel compelled to add a few more baldies (not to be confused with Baldies) from this era: the marvelous looking Atomic Skull, the thoroughly waxed and glistening Bloodthirst, keyboard-smashing Hfuhruhurr, and of course freakin' Psi-Phon (and arguably Dreadnaught).

The act of Posting Through It is as old as the internet.

Some legitimate emotion in a thread about brigading a vote in favor Firestorm, of all places.

Ran across my tea-obsessed pal @deepsixd.bsky.social (who should come back to bsky)

Got curious and decided to look up what the DC Message Boards I posted on as a kid were talking about on 9/11... harrowing stuff

Finally finished posting William Messner-Loebs' "lost" Flash commentary with his and everyone's favorite issue from this run: the one where nobody dies (spoilers)

Fascinating looking at the just-found Shuster page side by side with the recreation Bog drew from the script! (I'm assuming everyone at DC has completely forgotten this issue exists or they would have already published it during some anniversary or other.)

I keep hearing about a "DC sandwich guy" and keep thinking "it's obviously a burger"

Always thought "Supermanes" was a pretty silly way to translate Supermen. The Spanish edition must have struggled with that too, since they went with "Superhéroes" for the first issues and then switched to "Superhombres"

At age 7, I asked my grandma for a comic (hoping to get Mickey Mouse or Bugs Bunny) and she got me this Mexican collection with the first four parts of Reign of the Superm-- sorry, "Reino de los Supermanes". Didn't understand shit, hooked for life.

That's such a great issue, too: I LOVE the stuff with Prof. Hamilton and José Delgado messing with Luthor

Yeah, there it is! #451 (How could I flip past a Lex shower scene?!)

Almost forgot the one where Jimmy Olsen got fired and pulled off the old George Costanza "just come back on Monday like nothing happened" technique.

1988 Ruby-Spears cartoon Lex Luthor is the best Lex Luthor.

This is the most shocking adaptation of this storyline I've seen yet.

Please indulge me as I repost some clips from the 1988 Superman cartoon that I'd posted on Twitter, starting with this incredible one of Superman yelling “KRYYYYYPTOOOOONITEEEEEE!”. Thank you.

This show's facial expression game remains undefeated.

ALMOST done covering the 1988 Ruby-Spears Superman cartoon at Patreon and the newsletter. The latest episode features Superman being defeated by a 14'' TV and the introduction of this series' nastiest villain, Mayor Dr. Ratbat McSpider.

Random recommendation: @bookofpdr.com's article about the time Jimmy Olsen was awarded an Iron Cross by Hitler, which includes phrases like "I'll pretend I enjoy kissing her so those Nazi rats won't get suspicious!" the-avocado.org/2021/02/09/j...

I didn't run into Guice's Flash until later, but I'll never forget how he drew that lab cafeteria worker who just wanted to be a dancer in the Kilg%re storyline (Mike Baron would later admit being coked out of his mind while writing this, which I think even my 10-year-old self had already guessed)

There's a lot of tough competition for best Superman artist of the '90s, but Jackson Guice's Lois Lane will always be "my" Lois Lane. His female figures had a comfortable realism rare for '90s superhero comics. (Also, damn him for making the Lex Jr./Matrix look believable.)

What a bummer to hear about Jackson Guice, the man who was tasked with drawing a boozy ex-boxer praying over Superman on the floor of a bar and turned it into one of the most heart-wrenching sequences of panels in comics.

Not a coloring book, but are you aware she's in the Man of Steel Sourcebook by Roger Stern? With JGL art!
