Co-bought this on cassette with my best friend at the old CNA in Rondebosch, Cape Town. I already owned two cassettes but those were presents - Pet Shop Boys' Discography (formative, wore it out) and the Cats cast recording (formative in the sense that it gave me a lifelong loathing of musicals)

We've allowed the growth of a dangerous digital space where pretty much anything goes. Earlier this month, an AI-generated deepfake video appeared online showing a convincing replica of me announcing my “defection” from the Conservative Party to Reform. Thousands of constituents saw it, tens of thousands more nationally, and it led to an inevitable storm of confusion, denial and online abuse. I immediately issued a statement explaining it was a fake. Yet even that sparked more questions: “Was that statement also fake?” When I asked Meta to remove the video, I was told it didn’t breach their publishing guidelines. I still don’t know whether it was the work of a local prankster or part of a more organised campaign of disinformation by a political opponent. What’s clear is that it could have been either, because online, no one is truly accountable. We’ve allowed a digital space where almost anything goes, and where anonymity and fake news too often replace authentic accountability.

AI-generated videos have been clogging social media feeds as Hurricane Melissa heads towards Jamaica, diverting attention from critical safety information about the storm. Agence France-Presse reports it has surfaced dozens of fakes, most bearing watermarks for OpenAI’s text-to-video model Sora. The videos depicted a range of fabricated scenarios, from dramatic newscasts and shots of severe flooding to images of sharks in the water as well as poignant scenes of human suffering. Others appeared to show locals – often voiced with strong Jamaican accents that seemed aimed at reinforcing stereotypes – partying, boating, jet skiing, swimming or otherwise minimising the threat of what forecasters have warned could be the island’s most violent weather on record.

Had a Bigsby B5 and Vibramate that I wasn’t using, so I put them onto my goldtop Les Paul. The installation doesn’t sit flush on the carved top, of course, and it makes the instrument rather heavy, but it sounds and feels great - and it doesn’t look bad either.

According to Friend’s privacy disclosure, the startup “does not sell data to third parties to perform marketing or profiling.” It may however use that data for research, personalization, or “to comply with legal obligations, including those under the GDPR, CCPA, and any other relevant privacy laws.” In other words, there’s a whole litany of ways the private conversations I have with people could make their way out into the ether. There’s no way to access a log of what the Friend has picked up, so I have no idea what it heard and what it didn’t.
