‘Together’ is everything. DIY at scale - growing organic food, fixing community roads, assembling low waste houses, building large sail ships, founding global collectives, facilitating chocolate tonnage, bringing hundreds together.
Doing this today. Time for us civil society folks to think beyond just grants. Yes it’s a last minute Blue Sky post. us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regi...

It’s hard to explain to folks that I left home today in the pre-dawn dark with a chocolate dabbed men’s underwear head wrap to go gyrating down the street to pan music and yet simultaneously remain deeply engaged in decolonizing chocolate supply chains and dismantling systems of oppression.

Kiddies Carnival did not disappoint. Thousands of dedicated children, parents, grandparents, teachers, bandleaders in an amazingly diverse space - but with community commonalities. We under appreciate what we have evolved. Blessed to be from here.

Carnival is full of amazing emotions - exuberance, creative outpouring, connection, pride, AND a ton of challenging ones - regret, tabanca, restlessness, longing, craving & more. 4 days till it’s done, costume still unmade (in photo), missed many fetes, didn’t exercise enough, no Jouvay band. Lawd!

Ok. Why are we spending money badly? Convenience? Cost? Lack of information? I think Starving The Rich is the best religion, philosophy, motto we can have. And the alternative tastes better, is better for us, builds community, etc. Do.Not.Buy.Corporate.Food. Regularly. Wanna form a group? Msg me.

North west coast #Trinidad was stellar today. Green seas, sunlight and even a troop of #capuchin monkeys. This is the youngest one.

Carnival is now also films/videos. Thrilled!

Never really used Twitter so getting accustomed to this format. I need a microblogging space like a non meta IG to share my photos and life.

Here’s some pics as we expand the 90% local cafe menu. Food is the most frequent political purchase for a lot of us. Land. Ecology. People.

I realized I didn’t share the soundscape! Here it is!

I visit LOTS of cafes. Today it’s this Woodbrook one while the Venezuelan staff cleans and listens to their music. I LOVE regular people crossing borders, finding safety, meeting others, protecting different ecosystems, exchanging food, teaching/learning languages, making new culture. Welcome!

It’s possible to assertively combat fascism and elitism while staying mentally healthy. Data shows that doing mission driven community work, including volunteerism, helps. These birds help. Daily co-counseling helps. Exercise helps. Radical honesty helps. There are many ways to reduce fragility.

Planted a little ‘Pâte De Cheval’ yam about 5 years ago. We kinda forgot about it. This weekend we harvested 20 plus pounds. I’ve been feeling anxious about planting food. This helps.

Starting 2025 researching the term ‘Constitutional Crisis’. We better get cozy with words/phrases such as ‘de facto coup d’état’, sovereignty, administrative paralysis, constitutional convention, political crisis, rule by decree, etc. Ostrich effect seems to be slowing our use of these terms.

The view from my computer today as I examine funding flows in the Caribbean and compose a report. I can’t begin to tell you how LUCKY I am to have this abundance around me - the sunlight, the breeze, the birdsong, the lush vegetation. But it’s not all coincidence. It takes intention. And effort.

30 minutes drive east of Port of Spain and I arrive at our unfolding homestead. This relatively undomesticated space immediately calms my sympathetic nervous system. And of course finding fallen mangoes at the roadside adds a major lagniappe to a lovely journey.

Here’s the finished ‘Budget Staycation for Tropical Farmers’ when you or your friends grow and process coffee and chocolate
January 26, 2025 at 2:44 PM
Every day’s a Staycation. I just pot roasted batches of green coffee differently. THEN prepared a homemade 70% drinking chocolate and the 2 different espressos. THEN frothed some gross powdered milk (all I had). THEN drank each separately. THEN mixed different batches like a child with mud pies.

Annually the Carnival Season reminds me why land and community based cultural
practices are SO important. Community relevant songs, singers, context, audience, dances, etc fill my body with health.

In this case I mean 3 Canal and Black Box (can’t tag here … yet).

I already have all of this waiting in the house - roucou/Achiote seeds to extract and make a paste, coffee to peel and ferment, soursop to deseed and make a drink.

Morning mint tea in our tiny backyard keeps me engaged with #gardening otherwise the spreadsheets, housework, food processing, etc draw me away from the fundamental need - food.
November 24, 2024 at 11:32 AM
And we grow the rest in this (currently) super overgrown backyard alongside our very fertile chicken coop.

We grow some of our food on 2 of our mortgaged 11 acres that’s a rectangle smack in the middle of this photo
November 18, 2024 at 10:48 PM
We’re always growing food. Mainly perennials but also some of our favorite annuals. Tomatoes (5 varieties) and pimento peppers. Come visit in 8-12 weeks depending on the variety you like.
