They are at 56% of generation, 30% of consumption. Depends how you measure it. They do have political motives though - to be independent on oil. Which is obviously the antithesis of Trump. But the independence has a dark side - preparing for Taiwan invasion without being hurt by sanctions.

The US has clearly shown that "allies" is a purely transactional term to them. Our dependence on US weapons and fossil fuels is lethal to our sovereignty, unless we want the US arms industry, oil and chemical companies turn the EU into the same capitalist freakshow the US is

And more importantly, it destroys the "additionality" BS argument. China is still building coal power and burning coal. But it is doing this as a transition and backup generation. I'm pretty confident before long energy storage will start to eat away at coal powers function and backup source too.
