We have five working groups to tackle our challenges and make research more inclusive.
@drjodipawluski.bsky.social is the lead of WG5- communication, dissemination and outreach.
I will be teaming up with her. There will be lots of learning and growing- I am lucky 🩷

Yesterday was the first official meeting to kick-start the action. We gathered in Brussels, networked and made some key decisions.
As our administrative officer says…HAPPY BIRTHDAY EU-SABV! 🩷

What is a COST Action, you may ask:
- COST Actions are efficient networking tools.
- COST provides funding for research coordination and capacity building.
- COST doesn’t provide funding for research but pools researchers to achieve research results by networking.

@jaricivana.bsky.social our action chair- had this brilliant idea that there is a need of a broader network and brought everyone together to apply for a COST Action.
Getting accepted for a COST Action was no easy job- acceptance rate is only 8%!! 😲 @costprogramme.bsky.social

Meet the team of EU-SABV!
This is a group of researchers with a special interest of including sex as a biological variable into their work.
For the next 4 years, this team will work to enhance current SABV policy in preclinical research!

Oh you do have my attention @ibnsconnect.bsky.social 🤭
I love this part of the science 🩷

IBNS is a truly wonderful scientific community — supportive, inspiring, and full of wit!

First day of my Erasmus visit at Nencki Institute started quite strong! Within the second hour of my arrival, I got to meet Prof Harold Varmus- 1989 Physiology/Medicine Nobel prize laureate 🤩
Is this how life is in Nencki? Or am I in a dream? Cant lie..look forward to day 2!

What’s behind our new study? 🧪
Using a rat model of autism, we showed sex-specific shifts in leptin, ghrelin & orexin!
Findings highlight the need for sex-specific metabolic research in autism while suggesting a shared mechanism with eating disorders.

Now I know the support of COST and have a newly formed network of (future) leaders 🩶
September 10, 2025 at 12:03 PM
We had several exercises with one of them being what comes to our minds when we think about an inspirational leader..? My leader was @jaricivana.bsky.social! Thank you Dr Jaric for creating opportunities for early career researchers like myself. @costprogramme.bsky.social @costacademy.bsky.social

Until now, being in a COST Action felt like something almost unreal. With the leadership training, I finally saw its reality and know what I need to do. On October 22, I’ll be back in Brussels for the kick off meeting of our action. Can’t wait to have the whole team together 🩶 #COST

My fav session was by @denisebelsham.bsky.social Not for the science part only- she encouraged everyone one of us to #ShowUpAsYouAre
Science isnt one path.
Science prefers diversity.

I was supposed to rest after my dissertation. So I checked my calendar, only to realise that August is the only time to submit 4 project proposals and 1 report before I leave for a conference, concert and workshop in early Sept and a month long research visit in late Sept 🥲 #autism #busypostdoc

Another example is when the mother has limited resources of bedding material, it increases the anxiety and effects maternal care. This in turn has interesting effects on pups’ social play behaviour 🩷
June 29, 2025 at 10:33 AM
Then we had multiple talks on maternal care and how it affects the pups. I was aware of the behavioural effects of maternal separation on pups but wasnt aware of the effects on gut! 🩷

You look at social play behaviour and say oh yeah both sexes exhibit it on similar levels. But when you look deeper you see females have stimulation of OXT neurons in PVN whereas males have an inhibition and differences in NAc as well.
Similar behaviour, different mechanisms 🤩🩷

Take home messages from #IBNS2025;
Not all rats enjoy playing as much and there are ‘popular’ ones. This makes some others feel left out and exhibit anxiety like behaviour.
Not all controls are controls and individual differences should be carefully evaluated.
Play behaviour is tricky 🤓🩷

As usual, her points were clear and direct;
‘You cannot fix an oven with a refrigerator manual’.
Having differences in sex doesnt mean one is normal and the other is not.
Why are we so fixed on “atypical”, “unnatural”
Variability is good and important. We need different.
