Former English teacher, former library worker, forever learner.
Not consistent w/social media, but there will be swears, pro-labor, pro-liberation, anti-racist content. Also some cats. she/her #freepalestine so you can block me now.
This week is #nationallibraryweek and today is #nlwd2025. Pop in to your local library to say hello to the staff, bring them treats if you can, but a simple “thank you” will make anyone’s day.

19 pages in of One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This by Omar El Akkad. Every paragraph is a poem. “In truth, I lean away from the faraway side of my daughter’s lineage on her behalf because for more than forty years I’ve seen what carrying that weight means.” (1)

But this section from Chapter 41? The holding of breath. A glimpse into Mr. Mack's personality. The building of tension. Another held breath. Then how Lavalle breaks that tension? Beautiful doesn't begin to do it justice.

Finished reading The Devil in Silver by @victorlavalle.bsky.social last night. Tbh, it took me 93% of the book for the genius narrative style to click (that's on me), but once it did? Damn!
LeClair the Rat got me there. (1/2)

One of the best #valentinesday cards/gifts from students because of the inspo after we read Between Shades of Gray by @rutasepetys.bsky.social
The punniness was *chef's kiss*. AND some kids went to meet the author for her Salt to the Sea book release & got me a signed copy? Top tier moment.

#otd 2 yrs ago Lucky Boi literally walked into my life. He meandered into the backyard and jumped into my lap when I bent down to give him some snacks. We hung out together all day. He came back the next day and then the next. On that 3rd day I knew he had adopted me. Who's the lucky one?

#otd when I made a crap-ton of #macarons for my French II students. Three of them did an "unboxing" video + review and it was amazing. I wish I had that video.

4. Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
4/5 stars.
I wish that the impact of Western settlers on indigenous communities would have been explored more deeply, but it was more of an aside than anything. If you're interested in THAT type of story, I suggest reading Isabel Cañas.

3. Where the Library Hides by Isabel Ibañez.
4.75/5 stars.
There were a few eye rolls on my part with the description of Whit's emotions via tense shoulders or what his lips/eyes were doing, but overall this was an enjoyable duology.

2. What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez.
4.75/5 stars.
The writing may not be elegant 100% of the time, but the story was excellent and fast paced. Ends with a major cliff hanger, so you might want to have the 2nd book on deck.

1. We Shall Be Monsters by Tara Sim
5 stars.
"Claiming that a human woman was a dakini...was not a casual offense. It implied there was something wrong with her-even if she was merely widowed, single, or too smart for her own good."
1st in series. Can't wait for the next!

I go through my #otd photos every morning. This screenshot from an email I received my last year of teaching breaks my heart. I miss it, but systems in place don’t want students or teachers to thrive. #guncontrolnow #teaching #education

This is my text exchange with my manager. I understand that people don’t have to care, but as a manager, shouldn’t you at least pretend to care about the only other person you work with full time? 😂
This is why I don’t feel bad about calling out. But I pretend to.
