Recently, I was playing with extracting brain activity using ICA (I know that some use SSD, but I use ICA).
Here's one example from the dataset with somatosensory stimulation. There are several components over the right somato-motor area (where the brain responds to stimulation).🧐

Nick (@willenjoy.bsky.social) is obsessed with signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). And for good reason! It could explain many results. Our simulation toolbox meegsim enables setting up SNR of individual sources as well as SNR of all signal sources with respect to all noise sources.

We (I and @willenjoy.bsky.social) created a toolbox for simulations of EEG/MEG because we needed to simulate data. Our initial aim was to simulate connectivity. For this short clip, I simulated two sources with phase connectivity using our toolbox.

Simulations are fun! Especially with the right tools😉.
@willenjoy.bsky.social and I (with support from Mina Jamshidi) made a toolbox for simulating EEG/MEG data

I put together a quick simulation using it for this short clip. Took me 10 minutes (no, really!)

And here's the brain response to a very weak stimulus that participants could not have felt. But they said they did. What were they thinking? #brainactivitymovie
(there is a little slowdown before and after stimulus onset that is for presentation purposes; there is no slowdown in brain activity😆)

Here's the brain response to a clearly detectable electrical stimulus. However, the participant said that they didn't feel it. How come?
The topography is very similar to an undetectable stimulus. Maybe, they were telling the truth...

Here's brain response in MEG to a stimulation of left median nerve. When median nerve is electrically stimulated, you feel tingling in the thumb, and the thumb may twitch. The brain response shows clear lateralization in the early stages. The stimulus here was supra-threshold.⚡

Here's the brain's response to electrical stimulus that was of such a small intensity that it is highly unlikely that participants had detected it. And participants confirmed that they didn't feel the stimulation. Time 0 s is the stimulus presentation. #brainactivitymovie

Here's the brain's response to electrical stimulus applied to a left index finger in EEG. Time 0 s is the stimulus presentation.
The activity before 0 is also structured. Possibly, participants were expecting the stimulus to arrive.

Here's brain response to simple auditory tone in MEG (magnetometers). Time 0 s is the tone.
The paradigm was passive, no response was requested from the participant. "Just" perception.

Here's MEG (magnetometers) signal evolution over time and space before the button press. Time 0 s is the button press.
It is similar and yet different from EEG.

Here's EEG signal evolution over time and space before the button press.
Time 0 s is the button press. Blue colors mean that EEG amplitude is negative. #brainactivitymovie
