#OnThisDay in 1949, the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers met for the first time, in Strasbourg City Hall. 
 
At the opening, French statesman Léon Blum told the gathering: “I see the creation of the Council of Europe – or I wish to see in it – one of the great beginnings of History”.
