This story started more than 20 years ago when Cuban ornithologist Freddy Santana joined us at Long Point Bird Observatory! Fast forward, we’re slowly rolling out #MotusWTS infrastructure and projects to learn more about the importance of Cuba to migratory birds! @birdscanada.bsky.social

So this is coming, and we’re going to need a whole LOT of #science to help us figure out what to do against this and other large threats to life on earth. Luckily this is it’s a small one.
The chance of asteroid 2024 YR4 hitting out planet in 2032 is now 1.5%, or 1 in 67.

The OVERWHELMING likelihood is that the asteroid will miss Earth.

But for the first time ever, we might have to seriously consider a deflection mission soon.

Let me explain. 🧵 (1/x)

I’d rather we’d be talking about this risk. 1.5% is 1.5 more % than I’m comfortable with.

I’ve started to think that insurance companies may end up driving some climate action and responsible development faster than regulatory, social, or other government-driven means. It’s doesn’t matter if you ‘believe’ in it or not. It’s no longer even about relief or denial, it’s about recognition.
The property insurance industry knows what’s up with climate change and socio economic risk. It’s just about math and science to them. So it’s interesting to see what they have to say

NEW PAPER: determinants of stopover duration in migratory blackbirds: lean birds extend stopovers, immune status has a weak effect. Weather conditions (cloud cover, tailwinds) are more influential.
