Strange New Words (Adam)

I'm here to talk about Star Trek during the brief Indian summer of Stage 1 Enshittification.

I was hoping to find out that "Mil" was a Roman numeral for 1049th in the acclimation series, but no such luck.

This was definitely the best SFA to date. Fascinating exploration of paternalistic imperialism and the way it disregards other cultures' needs because it thinks it knows better. (There's a certain irony to Klingons being the victims of empire, however.)

I looked up vox in excelso and learned it's the name of the papal bull which outlawed the Knights Templar, so basically I'm more confused than before.

I thought of this episode in terms of imperialism, and the way empires seek to "help" other nations, without listening to their needs -- which is well-intentioned but also arrogant and condescending. The ending also reminded me of "Soldiers of the Empire," a favorite Klingon episode.

If you'd ever been hit with the spine of an encyclopedia you wouldn't need to ask.

I like to think she stayed a kid for a while before she went to advanced tactical training.

Same reason I can't use my phone with gloves on (whatever that is).

Using 1.77 instead of 1.85 sends the message that this show isn't *meant* to be cinematic, it's meant to be a TV show. I doubt the CW ever made a show in 1.85 (unless you count the Buffy musical episode).

I asked Cory Doctorow this exact question at an Enshittification reading last fall. "Why should we build a 'new, good Internet' instead of trying to destroy the Internet?" His answer (our enemies use it so we must too) wasn't the most satisfying.

I don't think there's any need for an internecine fight. Cory Doctorow has never misrepresented interoperability to be a silver bullet, he has always presented it as one strategy in a multi-pronged approach, together with government regulation, antitrust enforcement, and a tech labor movement.

I miss Moore's Delicatessen in downtown Burbank. It went out of business in 2020. It was a popular lunch spot for employees of Cartoon Network, which was across the street, and they had doodled cartoon characters all over the walls in the back room.
