Yes, that’s an existing problem, but it doesn’t mean it will always operate that way. And it doesn’t seem that they’re planning to introduce those same stipulations given they use the term “cultural workers” and explicitly call out people who don’t get captured under the term working artist.
Randi Berry, the executive director of IndieSpace, an organization that supports independent theater, called artists "the backbone" of the city's cultural and economic life but often excluded from affordable housing because of the nature of their professional lives. "Many juggle multiple jobs and gig work to make ends meet, so census data rarely identifies them as full-time artists," said Berry in a statement provided by Powers' office. "As a result, thousands remain ineligible for the housing meant to support working people." The "Portrait of New York State Artists" survey in 2022 revealed that 57% of more than 13,000 respondents earned less than $25,000 in the previous year and nearly 86% earned less than $50,000. Sixty-three percent of respondents said that if they were hit with an unexpected expense of $400 they would only be able to pay using credit.

This is from the Triompho di Fortuna by Sigismundo Fanti. From the Met Website: This elaborate frontispiece is based on a drawing preserved in Christ Church, Oxford, that scholars agree in attributing to the Sienese painter and architect Baldassare Peruzzi (1481–1536), best known for designing the Villa Farnesina in Rome and for decorating many of its rooms with frescoes—including one that represents the horoscope of the villa's patron, Agostino Chigi. The frontispiece suggests that the fortune-telling method contained within the book has its basis in astrology or astronomy—scarcely distinguished at the time—and in chance. The seated astronomer with astrolabe and compass alludes to the use of the stars to foretell the future, while the naked youth holding a die refers to the saying of the ancient Greek philosopher Heraclitus that 'time is a boy playing dice'. This same juxtaposition of randomness with science is illustrated in the upper half of the design. The strongman who supports the celestial sphere calls to mind the ancient marble statue now known as the Farnese Atlas—then in a fragmentary state in the Del Bufalo collection in Rome—that was renowned as the only representation of the heavens to survive from antiquity. Elsewhere in the book, Atlas, with the globe on his shoulders, is identified as the prince of astrologers. But here the sphere Atlas supports is turned by an angel and a devil—the only reference to a Christian framework controlling events—and the pope seated precariously on top suggests the medieval imagery of the Wheel of Fortune, which capriciously elevates popes, kings, and criminals only to bring them crashing down at whim...Perhaps it is Rome that we see in the background, where a large clock alludes to the measurement of time and to the use of the hour to determine the game's outcome. The Pantheon may have been represented because it was believed to serve an astronomical function in antiquity. Lactantius: De Opificio Dei by S. de Colines, dated 1529, plate 49 in Four Centuries of Fine Printing. One Hundred and Ninety-Two Facsimiles of Pages from Books Printed at Presses Established Between 1465 And 1924 by Stanley Morrison. The page is roughly rectangular, printed in black ink on creamy paper. Around the central block of text — the title and imprint — runs a broad ornamental woodcut border, carved in relief and printed simultaneously with the type. The border is a frame of interlacing foliage and ornament in the Renaissance grotesque style: a design of curling vines, flowers, acanthus leaves, and small mythical or heraldic figures intertwined into an intricate band that surrounds the text on all four sides. At the top, amid scrolling foliage, are two round medallions, one in each upper corner, each containing a profile head — classical in style, recalling Roman coins or cameos. Between them, tendrils of vegetation curl and meet in a central flourish. The side panels are vertical vines thick with leaves and blossoms, densely carved but symmetrical, rising like vegetal columns. The carving gives a rhythmic alternation of dark and light — solid blacks for the leaves, white cut lines for veins and highlights — producing a lively play of texture without tonal shading. Along the bottom, two heraldic lions face one another, standing on their hind legs, each pawing toward a starburst or floral emblem at the center. Beneath them is a small rectangular cartouche bearing the initials “SDC”, the monogram of the printer Simon de Colines. The title is within the frame, set in roman type, giving the author’s name (Lucius Coelius Lactantius), the title (De opificio dei), Erasmus’s editorial contribution, and finally the imprint: Paris, Simon de Colines, 1529. Text reads: L.COELII LACTANTIIFIR miani liber de opificio deiseu formatione ho minis : Erasmi Roterodami scholijs novilli me illustratus :& accurate per eundem recognitus Screenshot from the University of Michigan digitization. The title border has been attributed to Finé himself, the Regius Professor of Mathematics showing he probably had greater gifts as a book designer. The design features a carved woodcut border of interlaced strapwork filled with medallions of Music, Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy personified on the left. On the right Ptolemy (Astronomy), Orpheus (Music), Euclid (Geometry), and Arithmetic (Pythagoras). At the top and bottom is the coat of arms with three fleurs-de-lis blazon of France. This 1546 Paris title page for Discours du songe de Poliphile—the French translation of the Hypnerotomachia Poliphili—printed by Jacques Kerver and framed by an elaborate Renaissance woodcut border. The design is architectural in form, resembling a classical arch or temple façade, carved with mythological figures, foliage, and scrollwork. At left stands a satyr-like figure, draped in cloth looking towards the text. Opposite him is a semi-nude female. Both are surrounded by fruit and vegetation Both act as caryatids supporting the upper entablature, where a cartouche inscribed “HYPNEROTOMACHIE OV” introduces the title, flanked by grotesque masks and leafy volutes. Below, two winged putti climb among tortoises, fruit, and shells, while another cartouche reads “AVEC PRIVILEGE DU ROY.” At the center top is Kerver’s printer’s device, a compass within a cross. The title itself, printed in roman and italic type, occupies the central panel. Executed as a relief woodcut printed with the type in a single impression.

Experts warn them closure could spark gridlock stretching from Dana Point to Del Mar, with delays of up to eight hours in each direction. JD Vance is expected to be present and intends to lead the Parade. This show of military force and I-5 closures if the plan is completed will also be taking place during the No Kings Protests which are expected to be very large accross California cities and the rest of the country. The major road closures coincide with a federal government closure, leaving thousands of Marines and federal employees unpaid even as they are ordered to support the festivities.

Anybody ever seen this where the A in DEIA is “anti-racism” and not accessibility? Pretty sure the email this was in was written by chatGPT so I’m wondering if it hallucinated what the A stood for.

I used to do this in the olden days of the hellsite, and I am bringing it back. Today’s daily aesthetic is sapphic art in CLAMP’s debut manga, RG Veda, first published in 1989.
