It's short for 'footballer' surely? And anyone saying, "Now, that fella's a footballer!" would sound like your irrirating uncle from the 80's who had a company Ford Sierra and, no matter how hard he tried, everything he said made you cringe until you could scratch your head with your feet.

I wanted him to do well too. He's got a good story and seems like a decent bloke. I'd rather he did well away from Southampton though.
