Finally figured out the mystery of the dry challah. Bc I generally cut the salt in my bread recipes. This doesn't affect many of the breads I bake, but if it's a very enriched dough, the lack of salt leads to a dessicated texture that is not fantastic. Hence my brioche, pandoro, babka, etc...

This jack-o'-lantern was inspired loosely by the faberge egg that Tsar Nicholas II gave to his wife, the Tsarina, Empress Alexandra Fyodorovna in 1898. This year I didnt have enough time to really make something really detailed, so I just made it a regular jack-o'-lantern on one side.

I made this practice bird in preparation for Thanksgiving. This is a ballotined duck with a Chinese sticky rice stuffing. Need to render the fat a bit more on the duck but it was not an insane dish to make (especially for a holiday).

Word on the street is that St. Lenox was name-dropped in the Pitchfork review of Sarah Mary Chadwick - look forward to listening to her new record. And always great to be compared to Daniel Johnston, Joanna Sternberg and of course Sarah Mary Chadwick.

Someone sent a copy of Ten Hymns to autograph. A record abt immigration, released right before the first Trump admin. Feels oddly out of step w the times when I don't see many records touted by the press about stuff going on these days. That's Trump Tower behind me on the back of the record, btw.

Thanks to susbtack blog miserypunk for the shoutout as their #2 record of 2024. It's really fulfilling seeing how many of these one-person indie blogs were pick up the album and love it. They listened to all the other big name bands too but pick out my record anyway. And love the writeups esp.

2nd page Bruch Violin Concerto. The way the best musicians think of phrasing is they understand that wordless melodies are narratively underdetermined, and so everything within the musician's control, can be shaped to wield the melody towards one or another narrative compatible with the melody.

I think the second proof should've been longer. But getting back into the baking. The challah is close to being okay!

Appreciate this shoutout from Tyler Clark at @chirpradio.bsky.social in Chicago. I think this adds a few new ones to the list of comparisons (Blues Traveler), and a few journalists have picked up on the Broadway musical themes running through the record.

Always interesting to see these international Best of Lists, bc the writers have access to the same records but are outside the marketing barrage. As with many passion blogs, these people listened to over 500 records a year, so their list is meaningful.

Picking up the violin again. Abt 30 yrs ago, I competed in the pre-college competition at Juilliard and was devastated to win 2nd prize. My teacher told me Kyung Wha Chung had also won 2nd prize, at the same competition years previously. And that gave me the resolve to continue on, at the age of 14.

Thanks @kmuw.bsky.social Wichita's NPR station and Jedd Beaudoin for recognizing Ten Modern American Work Songs on their Best of 2024 list. Really an honor and always great to connect with the Midwest.

I really do think the album will stand the test of time, as a record of a period of where education was converted by the education industry from an investment into a burden. It's in the news all the time, but I think people don't realize that music albums can cover these topics too.

Thanks to Jersey Beat and Paul Silver for putting Ten Modern American Work Songs on their Best of 2024 list. An institution which covers so much independent music, and one I repeatedly tell friends to submit to for discerning review.
