Happy All Saints Day everyone 😇

We're very sad to not have more #31DaysOfGraves to post about, but very pleased to have been part of it. There's been so many great interactions and we've learned so much.

Thank you all, especially @annaandthedead.bsky.social for making it a thing.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 31 Momento Mori

Given the period St John's Graveyard was in operation, and knowing by then the Church of all denominations were not keen on the imagery of skeletons and skulls, we don't have any.

We do have an abundance of urns with whispering veils.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 30 Colour

Being in the wet North West we're often under heavy cloud snagged by #PendleHill, but there's a certain point, when the sun is about to break through, that natural colours in the graveyard come alive, showing you see things you might otherwise never have seen.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 29 Occupation

Every person interred at St John's Graveyard, #Nelson, #Lancashire, is a founder of our town, from JPs and Freemen to Farmers and Weavers.

James Cannell was a Mathematician and Teacher who imparted his wisdom on pupils who went on to use it in their own work.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 28 Column

We have so many great examples of columns that frame the main text of a gravestone.
Obelisks and traditional headstones feature these in various types of stone: marble, granite and that interesting black glass featured on Day 8.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 27 #Tree

There's a huge Hawthorn full of red berries for the #Wildlife of St John's Graveyard.

It reaches out to the grave of Hannah Demain who died at 59 Regent Street, #Nelson, as if to offer her its fruit, or to shoo away the ivy that encroaches her resting place.

#31DaysOfGraves Day 25: Ornament (s)

With such an old #Graveyard closed to new burials you rarely see active remembrance with symbolic items and flowers.

But you do see #Nature and #Wildlife adorning the graves and the areas around them.

Holly, Butterflies, Mushrooms, Clover, Bees, Blackberries

#31DaysOfGraves Day24 Unique Animal

It's a #MillTown, no scorpions here, everything is very run-of-the-mill!

So I offer you The Chadwicks and their beautifully carved prize bull, at craggy Edge End, Marsden Heights.

And the grave of Henry Pullman Veterinary Surgeon, with it's riderless #Horse.

This area of the graveyard is spongy and I couldn't get close enough between rain showers to move the brambles and take the pic when I was last there. But one of the other Friends of StJC called in today (a fine weather day) and caught this image, then consulted the records.

The inscription is IHR, similar to this image, of which also I have no idea of the denomination, I found it on an image search.

Any ideas?

#31DaysOfGraves Day 23: Cross
We have many crosses at St John's Graveyard #Nelson, but every visit I am drawn to this one.
I have no idea what kind of cross it is, nor the faith denomination, so if anyone has any ideas I would love to learn more?
The inscription at the base is inaccessible for now.

#31DaysOfGraves Day22 Landscape

Here, all our days are dominated by #PendleHill rising majestically from the #Landscape.
It inspires and dominates, affects our weather, relieves our woes.
And it's been here long before and will be here long after all of us.

I'd rest very peacefully with this view.
