Our story is a reminder that our paths may shift, but with passion, purpose and great mentorship we can continue to uplift our communities and inspire change. Thanks Dr. Bailey.

As the first-ever Black president-elect of the AVMA (@avmavets), he is both a testament to the progress we’ve made and a symbol of hope for future generations of veterinarians.

I approached surgery with the same vigor that I had learned from Dr. Bailey during radiology class.

Many articles have been written in celebration of Dr. Bailey. But on Black History Month, we celebrate Dr. Bailey and the milestones he represents within our profession.

About 2 years out of vet school, I had an epiphany: radiology didn’t completely fill my cup. :-) Radiology is deeply intellectually fulfilling, but there is a magic about the hands-on aspect of surgery that is undeniable.

The story begins at Tuskegee University (@tuvetmed) where Dr. Bailey served as my radiology professor. Spirited and energetic, his passion for veterinary radiology was infectious, igniting a spark within me. The spark was so bright that I started to pursue a radiology residency.

Compassion for all the species in our families is powerfully unifying. For Black History Month, we honor all of those who have continued veterinary medicine and animal health. The work they do resonates for generations and inspires us to continue the struggle….

One step at a time. .

These contributions were not only powerful for Peanuts and his family but his efforts will reverberate for decades. In fact, without those contributions it is unlikely that I would be where I am today.

I don’t know Peanut's specific diagnosis - although my suspicion is a chronic or acute transverse myelopathy - this image, which was captured by Dominic Pasquarella, highlights the vital contributions African Americans have made to veterinary medicine for decades.

Today, we highlight a moment that unfolded in 1964,at West Park Animal Hospital in West Philadelphia, where a multi-racial team—Howard Krawitz and Whitfield Thompson—came together to help a dog named Peanuts.
