I'm not sure Xi wants the war to end. Beside the cheap oil and other economic benefits China is reaping, it's in China's strategic interest to sit back and watch Russia continue to destroy its warfighting capacity while also occupying the attention of the Americans and Europeans.

According to Zelensky, the ultimatum also demanded Ukraine recognize Russian occupation authorities in Donbas, change its constitution to commit to "neutrality," shrink its army to 50,000 troops, give up much of its weapon arsenal, and recognize the Russian language as an official language.

In the end, the Trump administration’s efforts to seal the border and stop the illicit flow of goods and people will fail unless there is a decrease in demand that changes the economic equation driving those flows.
