Husband of one, father of four. Writer and other things. What was your favorite part of the day?
Mine was pretty much based on where I see the kids from here go to school. Which I guess puts Ole Miss in the conversation.

Kentucky.

Back home 93.9 starts on Nov. 1. My kids know to expect me to vocally repudiate if we even land on the station briefly any time before, say, Dec. 24.

Nice! It’s a lovely park. Before … not so much. We get to a River Bandits game every summer with extended family, (some of) my kids absolutely love the experience.

I left Iowa in 2007 but still have Coe connections in CR. Buxton was the last time I really paid attention to the Kernels, though I haven’t been to a game since maybe 2003, if not further back.

It was really amazing. I just lacked the journalism skills needed to produce something of real quality.

Also the team was pretty terrible, so hardly anyone remembers any of the players which means I’ve never really gotten to talk about that part with anybody.

2000 was summer before my senior year at Coe. I spent almost every day at the Vet during home games (June-August) for observations and interviews for my senior thesis project. I wish I’d done a million things differently and better but wouldn’t trade those days for anything.

Did not expect the Kernels quiz! Were you by chance following the team in 2000?

A little searching reports ghost kitchen for pickup and delivery. Turns out I was right by one of the first ones last summer in Dubuque, but we just went to Jimmy John’s.

I guess they have “On The Fly” locations, whatever that means, and several international spots (Bahrain! Qatar! El Salvador!) but only six traditional restaurants left stateside. https://bennigans.com/locations/

Gotta say, the Monte Cristo was pretty damn tasty.

Yeah, we’re getting them in the burbs. And in that gray, negative character architectural style. I just never go. Seems like now we’re using “fast casual” to mean “not burgers.”

Related: we ate at a real Bennigan’s Sunday. Last in Illinois and only one of six nationwide.

I’m kinda surprised PE counts as fast casual. I always file it under mall food court.

Technically no. But my Thursday column (sneak peek!) predicts we don't leave the decade without at least one civil suit alleging some violation of the below clause:

I interviewed Dennis Kucinich on that campaign trail (circa Labor Day 2003 I think) and I would love to play 20 questions to see if you could guess the person who joined him on that jaunt.

Forgot about the sliced peppers that needed to be eaten today. Friday afternoons are for everything that can’t get packed in a school lunch the next Monday. Also, apparently I’ve had this philosophy for a while now.

Perfect dad lunch today: finished off a bag of Hawaiian rolls and the last two slices of Swiss cheese and also the “is this too old to eat?” crock pot chicken.

The 2024 campaign signs across the street from me came down this spring in exact concurrence with a specific news cycle. Could not have been coincidence.

I mean, I get what I deserve for spending any time on that site. But still. Remember when the sketchy conduct was somewhat subtle?

Lots of double blocks required too. Hit the X, it goes away, then comes right back.

“Waukegan neighborhood of Chicago” … it’s about 40 miles north.

My kid is playing some of this in just a few minutes! Hope it warrants a “beautiful.”

I consider it a sign of social media progress that although I am outlier-grade passionate about American sitcoms from 1980-2022 (specifically NBC shows) I have steadfastly refused to hunt down the origin of whatever debate is informing my feed right now.

Most likely. I also spent a LOT of time at church. Not a church like that, but still.
