This is also brilliant for how billionaires enabled fascism and profited from it.

My latest find was published in 2012 about 1930s Europe. The hero finds himself drawn into the web of a fascist state seeking to control all aspects of government, police and the law, foreign policy, the military, architecture, the arts, sport - quite prescient about what’s happening again in 2025.

I recently discovered Alan Furst, buying something in a hurry at a railway station to read on the journey. I’m now on my fourth book, and can’t recommend him highly enough as he’s already recommended by Robert Harris, and compared to John le Carré - two more of my favourites.

Our longest train journey yet. Nottingham > London > Paris > Strasbourg > Basel. A brilliant trip, and there was even a slice of Black Forest Gateau waiting at the end! #trainsnotplanes

A visit to Sachsenhausen in 2018 posted today for Holocaust Memorial Day. An incongruously sunny day when we visited what is such a dark place.

I’m a big fan of John Le Carré’s “Smiley” novels and their screen adaptations. I recently got into Slow Horses (books/Apple TV) as Mick Herron seems his natural successor. I was delighted to get Karla’s Choice by Nick Harkaway (Le Carré’s son) for Christmas, a “new” Smiley novel. I highly recommend!
