This is an extremely regressive measure, as lower income folks spend virtually all of their income and are thus totally exposed to a sales tax, while the rich need only spend a fraction of their income, thereby managing & minimizing their tax burden. Terrible idea.
House Republicans will introduce the FairTax Act, proposing to abolish the IRS and replace income tax with a 23% national sales tax. They claim it’ll make undocumented immigrants pay taxes, but it shifts the burden to working families, raising costs on essentials while benefiting the wealthy.
