I think that Tom points to a huge problem for Americans. A lot of us fantasize about being the underdog fighting against an oppresive evil force. It's the plot for all our favorite movies. So, it's a self-fulfilling prophecy.

The main difference is that a true fascist state does not allow for any dissent at all. All public institutions are controlled by the state in furtherance of the state's goals. So, if you are freely able to post dissent on social media without immediate repercussions, you aren't in a fascist state.

Technically, I believe that Russia is, in fact fully authoritarian but not fascist, because they at least pretend to have legitimate opposition.

LOL. "artificial intelligence" isn't even really intelligence. Once an AI is trained, it isn't capable of learning new things, which is the main reason why we don't have to worry about AI taking over.
