I’m all for more diversity and less obvious programming but institutions should own those decisions and prepare financially for their impact. There’s an arrogance in some corners of the art world that everything they do is important and worthy, yet public indifference speaks volumes.

Compare 2019-21’s big exhibitions (Hockney, Emin, Cezanne, Gauguin, Picasso) with 22-24 (William Kentridge, MCM, Entangled Pasts) and the lack of starpower is obvious, especially when charging £22-24 a ticket.
