Extremely good analysis of the recent Ezra Klein situation.
I wrote about Ta-Nehisi Coates and Ezra Klein, why swallowing live frogs is a bad idea, and how context and history can release you from bright-kid syndrome, the illusion that you yourself are going to have every answer or fix the world.
You don't have to swallow frogs
Klein and Coates show that if you don't know what your core beliefs are, you're going to get played.

1. In a groundbreaking legal filing, transgender patients, represented by Women's Law Project, have filed a legal complaint against UPMC for capitulating to Trump and dropping trans care.

Trans Patients File Groundbreaking Legal Complaint Against UPMC For Capitulation To Trump
UPMC bowed to Trump and abandoned its trans patients, advocates say. It may have violated state law.

Witnessing this in real time, as so many others are, and it is so deeply demoralizing. Our institutions are SPRINTING to integrate AI and make shows of its utility when it is primarily undermining our mission.
“Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate…Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”

Watched Conclave last night, which I liked far more than I expected, and am now finding myself entranced by the actual conclave beginning today. Religious rites and liturgical forms are so wild

I work at a university where 1 in 10 students is trans. That’s pretty remarkable. And in this moment we need to celebrate it. I love working with such a massive body of LGBTQ students (~1 in 2).

I’ve gotten several AI generated essays this semester and they stick out of the pile like a sore thumb—and the composition in the intro is so often the first sign, followed by absolute word salad of information.

We know how our students write.
@jburnmurdoch.ft.com This isn’t true. The best GenAI turns out essays that are beautifully structured, flawlessly composed - but content neutral; i.e they can’t differentiate between facts, opinions & lies, or parse sarcasm & jokes. AI essays are frequently bizarre or nonsensical.

Yes, we can tell.

These executive orders on banning federally funded entities from recognizing trans people or disallowing them from using the bathroom are not self-executing or immediately enforceable. They require formal rule making at a minimum. They are a scare tactic. Ignore and do not comply in advance.
