A hawk flew down and landed on our balcony railing with a loud thump. The cats refused to notice. Not the kind of bird that piques their interest. The hawk stayed for a while, looking around, and then flew off, free as a bird.

Skies are finally clear at my house on the eastern edge of the city, but looking west from my driveway, I saw a solid mass of smoke over mid-city and west LA. My nephew has lost his house.
