I am reading #ForbiddenNotebook. I have a friend who comes from a very traditional Italian family and puts up with a lot. She talks a lot about herself and members of her extended family who chafe under their roles. What about gifting this book?

They are Turks who were settled there after the battle of Kossovo, who have remained what the Ataturk would not permit Turks to be any longer. They are what a people must become if it suspends all intellectual life and concentrates on the idea of conquest. #Blacklambandgreyfalcon #RebeccaWest

“Morgenstern said he’d been wise to #KarlKraus’s character ever since reading Die Fackel and learning that he sided with the antisemites in the Dreyfus Affair. ‘What?!’ Roth yelled, turning to Zweig, ‘is this supposed to be true?’”

I thought this would be a good companion Kieran Pim’s Joseph Biography. So much of Roth’s life concerned Europe in the lead up to World War II www.goodreads.com/book/show/36...

I loved so many though. Dombey and Son. Our Mutual Friend. Bleak House, for sure. I haven't reread in ages though, and your posts are making me pine for it! :))

I’ve been thinking about the power of narrative…Pick a few facts, string them together into a story. The power of the facts increase 100 fold. You have something that hooks into your life experience — something you can remember. When did the news start adding narrative to “just the facts?”

@paperpills10.bsky.social I thought I was sending you my invite code, but it turns out I posted it publicly and @dulcesuenyas2.bsky.social used it to join. I’ll just call her my lucky dip as we say in Oz

“Ask a historian: what is man’s greatest invention? Fire? The wheel? The sword? I would argue it’s history itself. History isn’t fact. Its narrative; one carefully curated and shaped. Under the pencil strokes of the right scribe, a villain becomes a hero, a lie, becomes the truth.” Isaac Asimov

Yea. Good mix to my taste. Not cluttered.
