Glad to see a mention of my new book, the Ghost in the Telescope, in a BBC article (www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...). Isaac Roberts took the first picture of Andromeda in the visible waveband 120 years before we took the first picture in the submillimetre waveband.
The Denbigh builder who photographed galaxies
Isaac Roberts, a farmer's son from Denbigh, shocked the world with his intergalactic photos.

After seven years, very happy to see my book about Herschel (the telescope) finally published. I did describe the big discoveries made with the telescope, but what I really wanted to was capture the crazy stories behind the discoveries. This is not the sanitised version of astromy. #popularastronomy

Looking forward to the meeting about the Euclid early results next Friday. Also be good to meet some of the Euclid folk in person, since so much of this vast collaboration is done on Zoom, email and Slack
We've got a busy day next Friday!

First up, there will be Specialist Discussion Meetings on the early science from Euclid and how geophysicists are tackling challenges with food production in the UK.

But that's not all!

If you're into your science podcasts, check out BBC R4 Inside Science this week, as the lovely @apontzen.bsky.social,
@amsterdammed.bsky.social and I have a nice long geeky chat about the new dark energy results from @desisurvey.bsky.social 🤓

Congrats to @desisurvey.bsky.social - it's looking more & more like dark energy isn't Einstein's cosmological constant! If you've woken up to the news & are searching for the publications, they don't appear to be on arxiv 🤷‍♀️ but they are online. 🔭 #cosmology 🧪

While the headline takeaway from the ACT results yesterday was "LCDM is fine", the headline from DESI is quite different - evidence for evolving dark energy, at up to 4.2 sigma, and over 3 sigma even without any supernovae, which persists with many different combinations of datasets. 🧪🔭

First images from the Square Kilometre Array Low Frequency (SKA-Low)!

Taken with only 1,024 of the planned 131,072 antennas, and it's already looking good :)

Beautiful Hubble image of Andromeda. We have made a nice submillimetre image of the dust but it isn’t as pretty as this
