This 2012 photo was taken in an uninteresting hotel room in Desert Hot Springs. Faced with an utterly plain environment, I had to get creative. The single hanging lamp was the only source of visual interest (and light), so I took the opportunity to truly test the Nikon D200’s high ISO performance.
This photograph was taken in 2012 inside a remarkably unremarkable hotel room in Desert Hot Springs. Faced with an utterly plain environment, I had to get creative with minimal props. The single hanging lamp was the only source of visual interest, so I took the opportunity to truly test the Nikon D200’s high ISO performance. The resulting moody shot now, years later, reminds me of the distinctive aesthetic of Christopher Doyle’s cinematography for Wong Kar-wai’s In the Mood for Love.

There's a 35mm color version of this shot that appeared in my first book "The Beauty of Fetish" (Edition Stemmle, 1998) but this is a medium format black and white version of the same setup. I believe this was lit with a single tungsten work lamp which was then bounced off a white wall for fill. Makeup by Mark Katz. Since my photo was used as the cover of last year's LP release of The Replacements 1986 show at the Cabaret Metro, I've had requests from collectors for prints of the image. It’s now available to the public with two sizes available: 8.5"x11" & 13"x18".
