My new e-book! This s non-fiction, talking about the process of leaving church. The pain and the trauma that it will cause.

How to leave the church
A practical guide to the considerations when leaving a church. Based on my experiences, but also the experiences of others, and the horrible impacts that leaving can have.

So apparently the demented, deluded, orange turd heap thinks Rob Reiner died of Trump Derangement Syndrome.

Rather than, as it appears, stab wounds.

There is some response to that which includes the words "Trump" and "Derangement", but in a rather different order and meaning.

So the day after I have wrapped my wifes Christmas present - a robot vacuum cleaner - I hear that roomba are in administration.

Glad I didn't buy one of them. Being a cheapskate sometimes pays out.

In the beginning was chaos, and God brought order to the chaos.

And all the neurodivergents shouted "But I knew exactly where everything was! How can I find anything now?"

"Oh no, I think we have killed him, what should we do?"

"How about the thing that will make us look most guilty when it comes out. That will be the thing."

So #strictly I think the leader board is about right, and i expect to see the bottom 2 in the dance off.

But they are all amazing. I think it is just a moment between them.

#strictly - Ambers second dance was brilliant. I don't care if she has previous experience, this was not that level, this was stunning.

She is a beautiful dancer.

@SteveClough lol I was the same. It was good but there was something missing for me.

#strictly - I was less convinced by George. I felt that he was thinking his way through, not letting himself go.

But then, what do I know. I wasn't just watching his hips, like the judges were.

#strictly - 3 dances in, and they are all amazing.

Balvinder - who is amazing - has been the weakest so far. But there is so little in it, IMO.

The church of John Smythe is marching with Yaxley-Lennon today.

#writerscoffeeclub 12 Dec: Who is a writer whose life inspires you?

Well Pratchett and Adams, naturally. Also Lewis Carrol, who was trying to do something really clever and anti-didactic, in a story of silliness. And making something that appears very light and trivial actually really dark.

#wordweavers Dec 12: Are bodily functions omitted or discussed in your stories?

Hinted at, or alluded to if needed. Because I would rather people used their imaginations. Because the readers imagination is far better than mine. Especially if i lead them on in the right way.

Sorry, but it is time:

On our way from Stockholm
Started to snow
And you said it was like Christmas
But you were wrong
It wasn't like Christmas at all

By the time we got to Oslo
Snow was gone
And we got lost
The beds were small
But we felt so young
It was just like Christmas

The same people who are constantly screaming about the dangers of "Sharia Law" and a "Muslim state" are the very people who want to impose "Evangelical Law" and a "Conservative Christian State". And I cannot really tell the difference.

I don't want either. I don't want to live in a state that […]

A work colleague lost her mum last night.

It really doesn't help my mood. I feel so sad for her.

Watching See No Evil - the documentary about John Smythe. Abuse at the highest levels.

What strikes me in the first half hour is how he was part of the plan to get abusive, religious right people into top places in the country.

And we wonder why we have abusive right cultists in the top […]

Anyone else recently newly on statins? I have been started (apparently, it is a requirement at my age), and I am feeling totally drained.

But that could be just my normal CFS, or it could be December. I am giving them a break for a week to see, but wanted others experiences.

Say Nothing on C4 - is very good, and incredibly hard. About the IRA, about the members, and - the episode I am currently watching - two young ladies on hunger strike.

Horrendous, the process of force feeding. But also, the bravery, and their thinking. "Some people live their whole lives for […]

My response to the current #writerscoffeeclub prompt - I am sure I am not alone in that I pick all sorts of characteristics from people I meet. Or even see. I make character as an amalgam of these.

And yet, people who might be referenced in my writings see themselves or others based on things I […]

Is it ethical to base characters on real people? What is the limit?

Totally - all of my inspiration is from real people. Not specific people, and not recognisable people. But traits of real people.

OK, the FIFA peace prize went to Trump, the medicine prize went to RFK Jr, and the economics prize to Truss.

So Literature, Chemistry and Physics still to be decided?

Maybe Johnson for literature, for focusing on writing his book rather than running the country at the start of the pandemic?
December 10, 2025 at 11:23 AM
#writerscoffeeclub do you reuse certain words as a refrain or motif or avoid repetition?

A lot of my characters have vocal tics or indicators of who is speaking. And repetition can serve to link parts of a narrative. Or to indicate that a character is bored.

So yes, I use it for effect.

So in Kim Stanley Robinsons superb Mars trilogy, they briefly discuss "fluent aphasia" - one character has non-fluent aphasia, and struggles to get the words out.

But he says he is glad he doesn't have the fluent type, because with that "the content lacks meaning, of includes wrong or made-up […]

The reason I love club anthems - from the 1990s mostly - is that they have a sense of positivity to them.

Not a naive sense. An acceptance that things could be horrible, but these people were going to focus on the good, the positive, and party whatever. To just acknowledge the chance to feel […]
