I am a political theorist and independent scholar dedicated to analyzing the origins of fascism. My background is in philosophy and political science. My work focuses on the tension between authoritarian governments and individual liberty.

My favorite was The Landlady by Dostoyevsky. We've read all of Dostoyevsky's major novels but this little novella was a surprise.

Last month my book club read The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton. This month we are reading American Pastoral by Roth. This month we are voting on the twelve books for 2026.

In the anthology, Did it Happen Here? Perspectives on Fascism and America, (Steinmetz-Jenkins 2024) the editor brings together a selection of historians that debate the central question. The result is a fair and balanced discussion of fascism in America as of March 2024. So much has changed since.
