Can finally breathe now that my contract as a VAP at Pitt has been officially signed for another year. This process has been arduous due to consistent budget cuts and hiring freezes over the past 7 months. I am incredibly grateful to return, especially amongst the current chaos of higher education.
Oooop turns out in trying to adjust my diet for other health concerns, I developed not one, but two, vitamin/mineral deficiencies. Primary symptoms of both deficiencies? Fatigue and decreased cognitive function. It’s a bloody miracle I’ve been able to accomplish anything this semester.

I have lived my nightmare - I ran into students in a rest stop bathroom.

Ready to cross the great state of Pennsylvania tomorrow morning with 5 dozen apple pie rice krispie treats.

Pittsburgh REALLY loves their fireworks. I love that for them.

Oh BOY. As someone whose research touches on neoliberalism and education, this will be disastrous.

Hey so “underage girls” are…children. The word you’re looking for is children. They’re not like, women-in-waiting or women-lite or whatever. They’re children. I think some of you are very uncomfortable with what that means for you but it is still true.

My takeaway from every new Epstein revelation is that some powerful people victimized many powerless young women, many more knew, some actively enabled it--and we're still being told that MeToo and accountability for sexual violence have gone too far

Whenever my Dad is on an international work trip and the eagles are on, my Mom texts score updates (only saying FG or TD) to the family group chat for my Dad to follow. It’s become a beloved family tradition, and I am so very sad this is the last season before my Dad retires.

Hey academics, I had a government health care subsidy when I was ABD and adjuncting. I know this is incredibly common for others in this position. I truly don't think I would have continued down this line of work if I didn't have access to reasonable healthcare. This does affect us.

I didn’t think it was ever going to be possible to feel this much joy on election night again.

Don’t you just hate when your sibling is funnier than you in the family group chat.

What does Nigeria possess that the U.S would be interested in controling?

Venezuela has the world's largest proven oil reserves.

Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producer.
Remember Iraq?

Don’t fall for the okie dokie.

Not since 1935 has anyone experienced a storm like Melissa. Melissa's record wouldn't have happened without climate change, which made the hurricane's winds about 10 mph stronger, according to a rapid attribution analysis by Climate Central. yaleclimateconnections.org/2025/10/cata...
Catastrophic Hurricane Melissa hits Jamaica as the strongest landfalling Atlantic hurricane on record » Yale Climate Connections
At landfall in western Jamaica, Melissa’s 185 mph winds and 892 mb pressure tied with the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935 in the Florida Keys as the strongest on record for the Atlantic.

I know the US media is downplaying a lot of global issues atm, but they are realllly downplaying the tensions in the Caribbean. Venezuela moved to suspend their oil contracts with Trinidad today, and the Trinidadian media is discussing war preparations.

My heart is so heavy for Jamaica this morning. This hurricane will cause irreparable damage and harm to a beautiful island and a beautiful people. I don’t think any of us are truly prepared for just how bad this hurricane and its aftermath will be.

It’s probably not a good sign that multiple people commented on how tired I look this evening.

Conference highlights include one of my ethno heroes complimenting my paper today (which heavily cited her) and a grad student seeking me out to share how important one of my articles was to his master’s thesis. 🥺

Good morning SEM! Excited for what should be a fantastic annual conference this weekend. I’m presenting my paper “Girlhood on Stage: Navigating Girls’ Ensembles in Trinidad and Tobago’s School Panorama” this afternoon (evening?) in session 4G: Island Listening. Hope to see some of y’all there!

Had to pause class today to check in for my Southwest flight, and they cheered for me when I snagged a group A position. I believe that is what we call building a supportive classroom community.

Gentle reminder that should a general strike happen, it’s crucial to plan and establish robust networks of community care.

There will be people, especially within the disability community, who can’t participate.

Who have needs that must be met.

Let’s make sure we figure out how to include them!

Children are being zip tied and dragged from their homes.

This cannot be allowed to continue.

No one should be treated this way, but allowing it to happen to children must be the final straw.

Keep resisting Chicago, we're with you.

Legitimate question for any academics with chronic illnesses out there, how are you handling flare ups during the semester? I've been navigating my first flare up of the semester this week, and this feels unsustainable. #AcademicChatter

Don't let anybody hit you with some form of "I can't believe y'all are so easily distracted. The halftime performer doesn't mean anything."

Putting a global artist who won't even tour in the US bc it's not safe for his community & core fans on the biggest televised US stage matters.
