It’s because handing everyone their own personal content distribution platform has led to everyone thinking that means they are now equivalent to Walter Cronkite. They do not understand it actually means they are now equivalent to the unpleasant fanatic on the street corner with a megaphone.

You are of course entirely correct — source: my same 20+ years — with the big asterisk that publishers and executives, not just the journalists, are also “the media,” and the traditional “wall between the news side & the business side” also helped contribute to the collapse of the business model.
