I think there's something in this chapter of the book "Man, Play, and Games" talking about the relation between chance and competition which explains the fall of the soviet union as well as the Dem loss in 2024.

For Wittgenstein language is a relationship of desire and effect between the speaker and the listener: when I speak, I want you to perceive something, your understanding is to perceive what I want. static1.squarespace.com/static/54889...

This experiment echoes 'Animist' ideas of causation: desire and purpose cause effects, rather than (or as a metaphorical description of) physical mechanics. After the spring thaw, the river *wants* to rise, or it doesn't want to rise. It is not just that the snow melts. bigthink.com/neuropsych/t...

In the experiment, a puppet on a slope tries to climb a hill. Two other puppets either 'help' or 'hinder' the climber to reach the top. When the infants are given the Helper or Hinderer to choose from, they selectively reached for the Helper, implying the earliest form of social evaluation.

The theory behind the use of koans in Chinese Zen practice ("What is the sound of one hand clapping?") is to think of a question so stupid that you're stunned into the profound silence of Enlightenment.

To go back to this quote regarding the reversal of subject and object in deity-worship, I'm reminded of this Simone Weil quote that puts it well: "It is not my business to think about myself. My business is to think about God. It is for God to think about me."

Such user-centered control over games to which they are addicted and which are deliberately designed to extract wealth until the point of extinction modifies the circuits of "mass" production to an asocial, atomized form of self-specialization.

Development in gambling technology enables the user to customize their own environment and play-style, creating the illusion of control and autonomy in an otherwise extractive, addictive relationship.

Third, machine gambling can be analyzed in a productive framework. “'Textbook capitalist exploitation thrives in peaceful and productive coexistence with the play-drive of the exploited,' Dibbell observes of the phenomenon he calls ludocapitalism."

The machine is designed to facilitate dissociation and flow towards an annihilation of the temporal, personal and social.

Second, machines are deliberately designed to intensify the addictive relationship. "Addiction is a condition that develops out of sustained interaction between a subject and an object; both sides of the interaction matter."
February 19, 2025 at 8:56 PM
The first major idea is that Machine gamblers do not play to win money, but to enter states of dissociation. "Neither control, nor chance, nor the tension between the two drives their play; their aim is not to win but simply to continue."

But first a note on the book's subject: specifically *machine* gambling or, video slots - as opposed to "green felt" games like poker or blackjack. Machine gambling represents the vast majority of casino income and the game of choice for most gambling addicts.

Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas was a great read which has only become more relevant since its publishing with the dominance of short-form algorithmic feeds. It will only be more relevant with the ascendence of generative-AI entertainment. This thread is a summary of its ideas.
