I think there's something in this chapter of the book "Man, Play, and Games" talking about the relation between chance and competition which explains the fall of the soviet union as well as the Dem loss in 2024.

The theory behind the use of koans in Chinese Zen practice ("What is the sound of one hand clapping?") is to think of a question so stupid that you're stunned into the profound silence of Enlightenment.

Addiction by Design: Machine Gambling in Las Vegas was a great read which has only become more relevant since its publishing with the dominance of short-form algorithmic feeds. It will only be more relevant with the ascendence of generative-AI entertainment. This thread is a summary of its ideas.

"It is as natural to die as to be born; and to a little infant, perhaps, the one is as painful as the other." Francis Bacon, going hard.

DFW/Infinite Jest suggests a chic-to-tacky parabola (not annulus...) of consumer technology. Here, the fiction "videophony" creates an arms-race of pleasant, synthetic images before being abandoned as tacky-as-a-leisure-suit. Is this is the arc of AI-generated photos?

YouTube's "required disclosure of synthetic content" guidelines are viscerally alarming. And the remedy of putting a little label at the end of the description is obviously inadequate. The remedy should be deleting the video, finding the creator IRL and putting them in a small box, imo.

Interesting take in the Oxford Handbook of Meditation: Islamic benediction prayer (salawat), ie giving blessings to the prophets, serves as a reflexive conduit to cultivate compassion towards others, the world, the self. "God is the subject" and the ego is mere object.
