Or like as in "crash test dummy" - which stands in for a person. This is all to say, the word "dummy" can be used in a derogatory way, but that was not the original intent in this case (or many others).

I think the definition of dummy that is probably closest to how they are used is "something that imitates the real thing but isn't functional," as in these variables stand in for the the real variables, but aren't the real variables. (In British English, pacifiers are called dummies.)

This award is given every two years to honor contributions. This mid-career award will be given to candidates within 15 years of their terminal degree.

The focus is on contributions to the development and application of statistical science to social problems and issues including but not limited to demography, sociology, economics, political science, criminology, education and public policy.

Put another way, scientists need to find allies, not engage audiences.
