Dr William F. Lamb at @pik-potsdam.bsky.social highlights the limited progress on #CDR in G20 pledges. He notes that while emission cuts are a priority, most countries lack clear, credible plans to scale CDR in line with climate goals.

How are the world’s largest economies preparing to scale carbon removal and is it enough?

Ahead of #COP30, we release our first Insight Report, that examines how G20 pledges address #CDR alongside emission cuts and what this means for long-term Paris alignment.

Did you know?

Peatland restoration isn’t just rewetting, it’s about precision, ecosystems & MRV. Data from #StateOfCDR Edition 2 shows it has the highest number of MRV protocols covering both removals and emissions reduction.

Novel CDR credits like biochar, BECCS & DAC saw major growth in 2023. But across all methods, sold credits still far outpace delivery. A snapshot from #StateOfCDR, edition 2 shows where the voluntary carbon market is heading. Explore more in Chapter 4: www.stateofcdr.org/edition-2-re...

🌍 CDR is in every climate plan, but do we really understand it?

Chapter 1 of the State of CDR (Edition 2) breaks it down:

1️⃣ Emissions cuts aren’t enough—we need CDR too
2️⃣ Only human interventions that lead to durable storage of CO₂ from the air count
3️⃣ Methods range from forests to tech

How much CO₂ is being removed today?
About 2 GtCO₂/yr, mostly from land-based methods like forests. Novel methods like DACCS & rock weathering are small for now. See where CDR stands in Chapter 7 of #StateOfCDR Ed. 2: www.stateofcdr.org/edition-2-re...
July 11, 2025 at 3:13 PM
In 2020–21 the world removed about 2.1 GtCO₂, mostly from conventional methods. To stay on track for 1.5°C, up to 9.8 GtCO₂/year by 2050 is needed. This chart from The State of CDR Edition 2 shows the gap between what’s proposed and what’s needed.
