Also, two of the directors passed away, and neither of them had a say in what happened to their movies over the years.

I don’t think he cares about Star Wars anymore. Not to criticize the Disney era, but I think him not having a say in the new stuff may have softened his feelings on the old stuff. Also, it doesn’t matter if it’s awkward, it’s film history & needs to be preserved.

One time in high school I was on a road trip with some friends and they asked me to tell them Star Wars. So I quoted the first twenty minutes of the movie.

Thankfully the people who care have the ability to add whatever tracks they desire!

They have to reedit the movie, the way they’re doing it. Which is the correct way.

I assumed they would scan the best backup copy of the original version they had and say it’s good enough. This effort is going back to the original negative as often as they can, but going to the next best version for any VFX shots. Not recompositing, preserving the original work in a pristine way.

There’s no reason, legally, morally, historically, that Disney wouldn’t be able to or wouldn’t want to restore the original Oscar-winning versions for the 50th anniversary. I just wouldn’t have expected them to actually rebuild it from the best final elements, instead of just scanning an IP.

Yeah, I went through the colorists’ insane ramblings and tried to pull out facts, but they make little to no sense. forums.thestarwarstrilogy.com/threads/marc...

That’s crazy! Which documentary?

We also found this link to an auction that seems to confirm that it wasn’t some secret preservation of the originals, just acknowledging all the optical work they did for the SE. www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/...

It’s an ILM crew gift from part of the Special Edition work, just the film restoration department maybe? I’ve only heard about TAR once before, this was the first time I’d seen physical evidence it existed. I have another thread about what I heard it was before now.

But they didn't announce that the sequels were going to be re-released until January 1996, so they wouldn't have been working on the trilogy anyway...

I'm not sure where an actual "Trilogy Archival Restoration" fits in, unless it was what other members of ILM were assuming was going to happen for the anniversary, as the original storyboard/design group for the changes was very small.

The issues with this timeline being that ILM was working storyboards and animatics for enhanced/added shots by late 1993, and the screening that showed they had a lot of work to do to save the negative wasn't until late 1994. Then they announced the Special Editions, then they started fixing things.
