Kenneth Mitchell as Kol in "Into the Forest I Go", STAR TREK: DISCOVERY (2017)
Kenneth Mitchell as Kol weilding a blade in a fight against Burnham aboard the Klingon Ship of the Dead. Mitchell discussed his transformation into Kol through the character's distinct look: "The costume is heavy and it's hot and the prosthetics are heavy and hot, but I've always been an actor that works from the inside out and the outside in. These costumes and prosthetics, when you put them on, they're like layers of your character, and the more you put on the more you start feeling like your character. Then you add in the language, this very visceral and guttural language, and it just lends itself so much to my character, being a kind of aggressive Klingon. I find the language itself is a little bit aggressive and I’ve found when I am speaking it, I kind of start moving my body a bit and using my arms and moving my neck a bit. All these layers added on to helping me create my character."

According to Mitchell, whatever the name of the character was going to be, he had little information about the role he was auditioning for: "When I auditioned, I didn't know I was auditioning to be a Klingon."

According to the installment of AFTER TREK immediately following "Into the Forest I Go", writers Erika Lippoldt and Bo Yeon Kim toyed with making the number of Stamets' jumps be 525,600, a reference to "Seasons of Love" from RENT (for which Rapp famously originated the character of Mark Cohen). The writers, however, ultimately settled on 133 jumps, a reference to the BATTLESTAR GALACTICA episode "33".

Being in full Klingon makeup prevented from Chieffo from enjoying simple luxuries like using her phone, using the bathroom, and eating solid foods while on set. While she said she actually enjoyed drinking smoothies in lieu of solids, Chieffo said the makeup's restrictions of every day behaviors was ultimately beneficial to her performance: "It just helped me be in that limbo of not quite being Mary and not quite being L’Rell."

Mary Chieffo as L'Rell imprisoned aboard the USS Discovery. Chieffo said her classical theater training prepared her to take on a role buried under transformative makeup: "I felt well suited for the idea of it. My training at Julliard was a very movement-based program, and a very voice and speech-based program, so we do a lot of mask work. There is a distinction between a prosthetic and a mask, which I also learned last year. But in that vein of seeing oneself as a different creature, seeing a different face and kind of letting your physical self manifest as a result of what you’re seeing — on the first camera test day, I looked in the mirror, and I was not myself. So I really leaned on what, visually, I was learning about the character.”
