Lloyd summarising contemporary British accounts of the pre-famine peasantry
David Lloyd:
As frequent almost as the commentary on Irish misery is the back-handed observation of Irish contentment[...] their idleness, but also their vivacity and pleasure, qualities that grate on the Protestant sensibilities of the English capitalist and administrator.

Yea, I've a 70s Sansui amp bought alongside a Lenco turntable for €20 the lot, and it's started making noise....doesn't owe me anything but I'd like to fix it if poss.

Next time I met him was in the Bailey, 1981 I think, the years of many election. Neither of us were sober but I inveigled an interview out of him for a fanzine and met a few days later in the Dáil.

First saw him on an actual soap box outside Salthill church after mass during the 1973 Election campaign. My mum stopped to listen, first time I remember doing so, and from that day on, gave Labour at least a preference. I was 12 and it's still one of my most memorable encounters with a politician.

I do, on occasion, toy with the idea of using my last name as Gaeilge here just to hear it back.

What is the word for the trepidation one feels when, just as one is about to deliver a manuscript, something that looks relevant is published - and it's 560 pages long?

In Hong Kong during the 2014 protests regarding changes in the electoral system, protesters used umbrellas to defend themselves against tear gas - might have been useful in Derry a generation previously.....

It's a Sansui amp from the '70s so not sure if it's even the same company these days? It's served me well, so reconciled to it not surviving, but would like to give it a shot.

Walked through town on the way past Poppy stuff. Big difference between here and Ireland where you never see soldiers on the streets.
