I had two copies of (the same version of) ebproof in the path, and the new version of tex apparently does not like that. I removed one and it works again.

Thanks! I think I used miktex for the installation, so I will look into texlive. I'm also considering just moving everything to overleaf.

I might try that. It is for my book manuscript, which compiled fine on my old Mac. It is also giving me an error concerning a package that is in the same folder, so I suspect there's something weird going on. Luckily there's no time pressure on this.

It sounds like what you're after is something like smaller workshops or smaller conferences that are less packed with talks.
