I really hate that what used to be basic rule of Internet culture - don't give out your personal details - has been so quickly eroded in the last decade or two.

Too true. Also the ananymising power if the Internet is important for people to explore themselves. This goes beyond sexuality - it's every aspect of your identity that otherwise gets crushed by the need to perform and conform.
