I did, but the issue was the needle hitting the presser foot rather than anything with the stitch itself

And yes, I am using the hand wheel to see where the needle comes down to make sure it’ll clear. Every time I think it’ll clear the bar, it doesn’t. I don’t even know where the most recent broken tip went.

It’s a Husqvarna Prelude 340. I know, ancient. I’ve had it since I was 16. And I thought I knew it well. But every setting for this overlock stitch has the needle coming right down on the J foot bar, which supposedly is the only foot I’m supposed to use for this stitch. Then the needle breaks.
