We really aren't.

So when journos want to "do a story about the furry fandom" outside of an ongoing con, there's a decent chance that is going to be a wildly inaccurate exploitative misrepresentation designed to clickbait.

I've been adding alt text to my finished art and work updates for a long while. These are some guidelines I've set for myself that may help others!

The following are things to focus on / include in alt text.

Include any text in the image. For example: "image text reads: (insert text)", or simply write out the image text.
Use effective descriptions to save text space while still conveying the tone. Examples: an excited anthropomorphic wolf, a solemn expanse of blue sky, a relaxed person seated next to a calm lake.

Describe the essentials. If the image is of a person / character, what are they doing (holding an object, sitting, etc?). what is their overall mood (lively, melancholic?). what are they wearing (a warm hoodie with stylish techwear accessories?). if the image is of a thing, place, or person,
what is the setting (a grassy plain with a far-off wall of mountains, the interior of a house, a yellow background?). what emotion does the setting convey (a whimsical field of flowers, a lonely cliff above a restless sea?). what colours are being used (a vibrant green jungle, a dusty beige stack of envelopes?).

Punctuation is Important. Be sure to spell check and properly punctuate your text. Screen readers will not insert forgotten periods, and may not interpret text emojis.

Know your character limits. Different sites have different character limits for alt text. Bluesky: 2000. Instagram: No Limit. Mastodon: 1500. Tumblr: 4096. Twitter: 1000. the following sites have no integrated alt text option at the time of this post: Artfol, Cara, DeviantART, FurAffinity, Inkblot, Pillowfort, Sheezy, Toyhouse.

if your alt text is heavy (such as this graphic) and exceeds the character limit, split your graphic into multiple images or link to an offsite post or document that includes the entire text.

could be written instead as: “image is a digital drawing of a moody anthropomorphic wolf wearing a dark techwear-style hoodie over a black sweater. his hoodie’s sleeves feature bold futuristic blue and purple graphics and cosmic-themed patches.”

If you want to convey that the piece features a character belonging to someone else, such as a commission, you can write “image is a drawing of the client’s character” while keeping the client’s name / link in the post body.
