No, I wouldn't say that the result that rests on a single paper. I'll leave details of the calibrations for oxygenic photosynthesis to other more knowledgeable coauthors. I would show you what happens when we relax or completely remove this calibration - aerobic respiration >500 Mys before the GOE:

We belive aerobic respiration predated the GOE by nearly a billion years based on two lines of evidence: 1) using genomic data several methods predict aerobic respiration in the Cyanobacteriia and Vampirovibrionia ancestor; 2) fossil evidence for oxygenic photosynyhesis by ~ 3 Ga, see figure 5 below

Dating Bacteria is hard due to the lack of maxima. Assuming aerobes likely postdated the GOE gave us better resolved ages, but also surprised us, but not Dr Dayhoff, showing O2 use predated its atmospheric rise by 900 Mys and helped oxygenic photosynthesis to evolve. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🦠🌍 @science.org study reveals oxygen-using bacteria existed 900M years before Earth's atmosphere had significant oxygen. This suggests some bacteria could use trace oxygen before evolving the ability to produce it through photosynthesis. @oistedu.bsky.social 👇
