In all seriousness, what do we do to stop the concentration camps?

If Trump pardons the January 6 insurrectionists, Joyce Vance writes, he’ll be making it clear that violence and lawbreaking can be forgiven in service to himself.
Trump Pardoning Jan. 6 Insurrectionists Would Endorse Attacks on Democracy
Rewarding people who tried to ignite an insurrection turns the pardon power on its head.

Tight, sometimes lyrical writing makes this middle grades book light enough for its heavy topic to not overwhelm its reader. It is not a happy fun read but it is a good one.

Block everyone who does follow back. Block all the follow farmers. Block every "nobody under 5k" or whatever.

Blockity block. Let that be your praxis.
A polite disagreement bot ring is flooding Bluesky — reply guy as a (dis)service
On the Bluesky social network, you may notice a lot of drive-by responses from accounts that rarely or never post — they just reply to other accounts. The reply pattern starts with a phrase like “I…

This is book two of the series. This time, the protagonist is the mouse from the first book. As with the first book, there are lovable and flawed dogs and caring people. No dogs die

I enjoyed this teen coming-of-age fantasy more than I thought I would. I appreciated the confusion and indecision the two leads experienced. I was riveted during the battle scene, which is rare for me. Book two is due out in late January

These are light and fun. The mystery is cosy. The character growth and developing friendships are satisfying. I appreciate that the character with dementia is cherished and her opinions are honored. The audiobook reader is excellent.

UnitedHealthCare, “…knowingly uses an algorithm that makes errors 90% of the time because it also knows that only about 0.2% of policy holders will appeal the decision to deny their claims.” (Quote is from Heather Cox Richardson’s 12/6/24 newsletter.)

You may not understand why, but the healthcare insurance and PBM contracts YOU have signed for Tesla, SpaceX , @X, along with CEOs of other big companies , have more impact on healthcare costs and quality of care in this country, than anything you can do with DOGE

I am getting better at using my darning loom. I could have darned them the traditional way but this wool yarn doesn’t have any nylon for strength. I am hoping the woven darn will be stronger.

I really like old herbarium illustrations. Last year I wrote some software to parse, score, and process the Oxford 400 herbarium dataset to remove the paper background and select the best photos.

@mguhlin.bsky.social I can’t find where you were talking about Joplin as an Evernote alternative. You noted that there is no web interface. Have you found a way to send things from desktop to the app even though you can’t view it there? That is a significant part of my work flow.

Our surprisingly long fall ended today with snow and falling temperatures. The coneflowers in my office garden were an appreciated counterpoint.

Remove the term under-age women from your vocabulary. We already have words for them, teens and girls. Since Mike Johnson is trying to bury the ethics report, Matt Gaetz likely had sex with teens.

That’s the quote. I was looking for it. And here it is. Hannah Arendt on the Matt Gaetz as AG announcement
'This process includes the replacement of all first-rate talents, regardless of their political loyalties, with crackpots and fools whose lack of intelligence and creativity is the best guarantee of their loyalty.' I enjoyed this historical fiction novel set in 2008 on the south side of Chicago during Obama's campaign. The author worked in older historical events and people. I especially enjoyed how the protagonist grew as a person and a community member as he worked for his neighbors to pay off a debt.

Lousy photos showing what I saw when I arrived home from work. Two cats are filling the entire windowsill. It is our only sunny windowsill. There isn't even room for the third cat.
