I’ll close out with a mention of Whiskey Tender by Deborah Jackson Taffa. This memoir was deeply affecting. The yearning for identity and connection with the past was beautifully written. I felt a strong connection with the story. I hope to find more impactful books next year!

The best book I read this year was James by Percival Everett. It was such a surprise. It was such an emotional re-rendering of a classic American story. I really savored this book.

Continuing reading reminisces: I also read both Brooklyn and Long Island by Colm Tóibín. It was nice to escape into someone else’s melodrama. A lot of reader reviews didn’t love the sequel but it actually rang very true to me. As you get older some themes just make more sense

I have been a voracious reader since I was a kid, but during the pandemic, unlike a lot of people, I did not find solace in reading. In fact, I couldn’t even bring myself to read any books in 2020. My brain just wanted the balm of mindless tv.
