The Guardian pulling no punches: Trump/GOP is using the shutdown to promote both "gangster weapons" and child malnutrition. America today.

Banned Books Week! Still hoping the Gov will sign my Freedom To Read Act. The ALA tracked 821 censorship attempts in 2024, 3/4 of which originated with outside pressure groups. Only 4% came from library patrons and 16% from parents. We need to protect librarians and kids’ freedom to read.

We need a symbol of resistance. Something we can print/sew/knit/stamp, make into ribbons and tie it to every tree and lamppost. Wear as armbands. I'm not a graphic designer but I'd like to get the idea rolling. My opening suggestion is blue with gray stars (Union colors) with Lady Liberty's torch.

Thrilled to receive the 2025 Friend of World Language Award from the Language Educators of CNY. As a former Russian teacher I know how much dedication language teachers bring to their work and how profoundly important it is to help Americans learn to communicate across cultures.

Toured some amazing district heating projects in Vancouver last week. The ones that are powered by reclaimed heat from wastewater are especially impressive, though I couldn't escape the feeling that there's a bit of magic at work.

My GOP colleagues love to rant that our climate policies will drive up energy costs. You know what's driving up costs the most? The warming atmosphere and attendant extreme weather. If we hadn't had decades of denial and disinformation, how much lower our costs could be!

A screenshot of NYT headlines today. Monsters are running our country. The Statue of Liberty should read, "All hope abandon all ye who enter here."
