Every creative work is a map of the creator's choices while making it. They are making the art for a reason, and that reason is part of the art itself. I guess this is a hot take, but I don't think personal interpretation matters more than artist intent.

Separating the art from the artist is how people justify continuing to engage with the creative works of monsters and also how people justify art theft and plagiarism. When the artist doesn't matter and the art is seen as community property, people justify a lot of bad behavior that way.
