I have been an avid horror fan since I was a wee little one in the '70s. I have a massive Stephen King collection. I also enjoy playing World of Warcraft and am a professional nerd.
Books are as close to "being in the story," as you can get. Movies can come close, if they are really well done. But the book is always better. Always. Because your mind can "take you there."
