This is really a series of mechanically cross compatible mostly science fiction games. I love the “lo-fi” approach to sf rules.

The 2nd TTRPG I ever owned a version of. Not the best game about modern magic users, but the most important to me personally and interesting even still

So a game trying to “emulate” a style like this made nowadays would take, or at least should take a very different approach to this game, nevertheless, it was in its own time an interesting and imo still perfectly workable attempt.

This is an old edition, and the new ones are mostly improved AIUI but this is the version I have to hand. A game for being incredibly dedicated to Arthurian myth and its conventions

Another one I haven’t tried yet, I like that it’s very informed by “OSR” style but isn’t closely derived from D&D the GM material (in the Warden’s Operation Manual) has some interesting stuff on both structure of horror & NPC disposition. Very bleak corporate space future.

A fantastic Greek hero game! Just a rollicking good time facing the Strife of the world

Not, by any means, a rules light game but less dense and much more compact than any of the 3 “full” editions of Exalted, and at a level I feel like would be manageable at my table. I’ve long loved Exalted’s ridiculously baroque setting so I hope to see this at table.

Brilliant heist action, rooted in a model that deeply cares about what the scoundrels do in the downtime. A game about embedding the PCs in a context! And launched a thousand hacks

Part take on HK action cinema, part its own weird time travel mythology, good mechanics, some reservations, but we had a good time

I considered not putting any version of D&D on my list but this list is about my taste and even if it isn’t still to my taste, this is the beginning of my history with TTRPGs

The TTRPG I own with the longest name. It’s also quite clever.

Not the best game on this list, but one that hit me very personally with its beautifully incoherent half satire half serious version of the War between angels and demons.
